How to tell stories

Barton, Bob, Tell Me Another: Storytelling and Reading Aloud at Home, at School, and in the Community (Pembroke, Markham) 1986. A great resource for beginning storytellers and experienced ones who want to get back to their roots.
Sawyer, Ruth, The Way of the Storyteller (New York: Penguin) 1990. One of the pioneers of keeping storytelling alive tells of her experience with this art form. Magical and inspiring.
Wanner, Susan, On with the Story (Portsmouth, NH: Boynton) 1994 A guide to continuing storytelling into middle and highschool. The book emphasizes writing, but has many activities have application for storytelling.

Sources for discovering your own story

Feinstein, David and Krippner, Stanley, Personal Mythology (Tarcher, Los Angeles) 1988. A good resource for finding your own mythic journey.
Stone, Richard, The Healing Art of Storytelling (New York: Hyperion) 1996. Contains many prompts for unearthing your stories and how to have community around storytelling.

Sources about community

Armstrong, David, Managing by Storying Around (New York, Doubleday) 1992. An excellent book on the practicalities and effectiveness of telling stories in organizations.

McKnight, John, The Careless Society: Community and its Counterfeits (New York, Basic Books) 1995. A challenging book about the commodification of caring and building upon the capacity of communities.

Mollison, Bill, Permaculture: A Designer's Manual (Tyalgum, Tagari) 1996. One of the founders of permaculture. Though technical at times, this book is an excellent guide for integrating people, land, and animals.
Waterman, Alan S. ed., Service-Learning: Applications from the Research (Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc., Mahwah) 1997. A review of the academic articles about how to integrate service with academic curriculum.
Wenger, Etienne, Communities of Practice(Cambridge University Press, Cambridge) 1998. An groundbreaking analysis of community within work settings. This work has influenced the development of learning community theory.
Zipes, Jack, Creative Storytelling: Building Community, Changing Lives (New York, Routledge) 1995. An excellent resource for providing opportunities for young people to write their stories and re-write their lives.
